Objectives:

Operational amplifiers are widely used in the analog signal conditioning chain. Some examples are signal up/down scaling, active filters, buffers, and drivers. The amplifier topology and required design effort depend highly on the application and required specifications. To ensure success in linear design, many parameters such as speed, power consumption, noise, offset, area consumption, input/output voltage range, load drive, supply voltage and production test time must be considered.

This seminar will guide the participants step by step through the design of the integrated amplifiers. The drawbacks and limitations of OTAs will be discussed starting with the basic operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) configurations. More advanced circuits will be introduced to improve the gain, input and output voltage range, common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR), power supply rejection ratio (PSRR), load drive capability, and offset of the amplifier. The negative feedback is the most powerful technique to control important parameters. Most of the presented circuits utilize feedback to improve the overall accuracy. The design of current and voltage references will also be discussed. The biasing current of the amplifier has significant impact on the overall performance. Several topologies and circuits will be presented.

Speaker:

Andreas Wickmann received his Dipl.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering from the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany in 2008. From 2008 to 2012, he was with Texas Instruments, Germany, where he was an Analog Design Engineer developing 16-bit SAR A/D converts and isolated amplifiers for current shunt measurement applications.

In 2012, he joined eesy-ic Ltd, Germany, where he has been involved with the design of low-voltage/ low-power analog circuits. Mr. Wickmann holds 3 patents regarding the circuit design of data converters and has published several technical papers.

Since 2011 Mr. Wickmann has been teaching Analog IC Signal Conditioning at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg dealing with the design of the integrated analog circuits.
